Godot Daily: Web Sessions, Restartable Embedding, and Leaner Binaries

The web editor moves to iframe sessions that can be terminated, LibGodot lays groundwork for start-stop-restart in the same process, and three de-templating changes cut megabytes from binaries. Web audio, WebXR, and editor workflow fixes round out the day.

Good morning, it's September 30th, 2026, and this is Godot Daily.

The big pattern today is lifecycle and weight: Godot is getting better at stopping sessions cleanly and shipping leaner binaries.

First, stopping things. The web editor shell has been refactored to run game and editor instances inside iframes controlled by message ports, in PR 123485. Practically, that fixes page sizing bugs and finally lets you terminate a stuck session by removing the frame — double-clicking close is now a real kill switch.…

Second, the web is sounding and looking better. PR 123996 overhauls the sample audio driver, correcting loop points and playback position for MP3 and Ogg streams when pitch scale changes, while PR 123965 fixes looped samples restarting from the wrong place after pause and resume. Separately, PR 123991 stops WebXR…

Third, a quiet diet. PR 123968 removes heavy templating from constant registration for roughly one-point-seven megabytes off release binaries, PR 122208 trims about three hundred kilobytes from GDScript annotation handling, and PR 123960 moves a huge string table into zero-fill sections to save about half a megabyte…

What's next: expect follow-ups on web audio testing…
